The Puritaniad

So, we set off, a merry band

A lying paper in our hand

That swore as God above was witness

We’d none of us got Plague or sickness

Not wife nor husband nor their daughter

(No reference there to how we’d caught ’er

Thrown from a house locked up for Plague.

Official passes can be vague).

Our servant too was free from fever

(Small mention here that he had ever

’Scaped a place from where they’d carted

One who’d recently departed.)

With such a pass who could refute

Our right to journey on this route?
